Good News on SC Retail Sales Tax

Good Afternoon, GREAT NEWS from the State House. About midnight last night, the SC Senate passed S-36 which eventually eliminates state retail sales tax on DME in SC.  The bill now will go back to the SC House of Representatives next Tuesday for concurrence which is expected to happen on Tuesday.  Once the bill clears the House it then goes to the Governor for her signature and becomes law.  This is the end of a 7-year battle by SCMESA and its leadership to eliminate retail sales tax on DME in SC. This is what the bill does: July 1, 2011 thru June 30, 2012, retail sales tax is reduced to 3.75%.  July 1, 2012 thru December 31, 2012, retail sales tax becomes 1.75%.  Beginning January 1, 2013, retail sales tax is  totally eliminated and becomes 0%.

Mike Daniel and his team has done an outstanding  job managing S-36 and its companion House bill through the legislative process.  We owe much  thanks and credit for this success in the Senate to Sen. Glenn McConnell (who introduced the bill), Sen. Hugh Leatherman (chair  of the Senate Finance Committee) Sen. Billy O’Dell and Sen. Tom Alexander for their leadership on behalf of SCMESA and the DME industry in South Carolina.

Please take time to thank each of them for their untiring efforts.

Bobby Horton, SCMESA
