In late June, CMS announced a policy clarification that they would not apply competitive bid rates for accessories used with Group 3 CRT power wheelchairs. CMS partially solved the problem with this clarification.
Reps. Lee Zelden (R-N.Y.) and John Larson (D-Conn.) introduced H.R. 3730 in September to stop competitive bid rates from being applied to CRT manual wheelchair accessories. Currently, there are 45 cosponsors to the legislation. This is a great start, but it is important for everyone to take the time to reach out to their representative to get them to sign on as a cosponsor.
The list of representatives who have signed on to cosponsors can be found here. Click here for a legislative position paper that you may use when talking with your representative. Join our industry by going to www.protectmymobility.com to send a message to your representative to ask them to cosponsor the legislation.
Do not think that your voice does not matter or that someone else has already talked to your representative about our important legislation. The more people your representative hears from, the stronger our message will be together. Please also encourage your clients to contact their representatives to tell them what their mobility and the manual wheelchair “accessories” mean to them. They can also send messages to their representative at www.protectmymobility.com.
